Aimee Chong
Story
Hi there!
My name is Aimee!
This year I have joined Water Aid's Winnovators Challenge which tackles global issues surrounding WaSH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) in alignment with the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 6).
I'm part of Sydney Water's sanitation team that we named 'Praan' which stands for Vitality in Hindi. Praan is a powerful word and is the essence of what we are all about and that is improving the quality of life of all.
This year, the Winnovators Challenge is tackling the issue of open defecation in Rural India. Almost half of India's population (564 million people) defecate in the open resulting in poor sanitation practices leading to the spread of disease, and vulnerability of women and children.
The issue is far more complex than just installing toilets in these communities. The cause of open defecation (OD) is much deeper and is rooted in cultural practices, attitudes and beliefs, and does not necessarily correlate to lack of income.
We will apply engineering and community engagement skills to the mechanics of diverting waste flow in twin pit latrines, and devise a community engagement plan for sanitation.
Please help to support Team Praan by making a secure online donation and by spreading the message! 50% of the proceeds will go directly to Water Aids work in India and the other 50% will go towards their global initiatives!
Thanks so much for your support, it is greatly appreciated!
